Ways to Combat Loneliness During the Holidays

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly, Yet …
At holiday time, the air is sweet with the aroma of freshly baked cookies, the streets are dressed in festive lights, and people are rushing with brightly wrapped presents for their loved ones. And yet, for you, the holiday season may not invite a sense of warmth and joy.

Health issues or echoes of past experiences, both happy and painful, may cause a profound sense of isolation and cast a shadow over what should be a joyful time. Comrades lost or maimed, the strain of being away from family and friends, or, in some cases, the lack of adequate basic necessities, may have rewritten the text of your festive season. But you can combat this by writing a new personal narrative. Here are some ways to do that.

Reach Out to Family and Friends
Make time to talk or video chat with your loved ones. Tell them how you’re feeling. Ask for help. Give them the opportunity to be there for you. It will gladden their hearts. And yours.

Connect With Other Vets and Share Your Narrative
The power of connecting with others who share and understand your journey fosters a profound sense of belonging that can transform the season into a shared experience. VA has many support groups and tools that provide a great way to meet others who understand what you’re going through.

Volunteer Your Time
Giving back to your community will help you to feel connected to others. You’ve heard the expression “giving is receiving.” Helping others has a way of helping us as well. And there are many different volunteer opportunities available. Look for something that interests you and fits your schedule.

Take Care of Yourself
Be sure to get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and exercise regularly. It is surprising how quickly these can help to improve your mood and reduce stress. However, when you are sad or lonely, allow yourself to feel these emotions. Remember: You are not the only one who struggles with loneliness, especially at holiday time.

Get Professional Help, If Needed
If you’re struggling to cope with loneliness or other mental health issues, don’t suffer in silence. VA provides support and guidance that will help you manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
