Social Media

Into Social Media? Join our team and make a real difference!  We are looking for both a manager who will work with our executive team to develop the plan and then manage its execution as well as lots of people to interact on the various platforms.

We are currently mainly on FaceBook and LinkedIn, along with our YouTube channel. To reach the heroes who were in Afghanistan and Iraq we need to increase our presence, including crowd funding efforts. Our goal is to reach as many post 9/11 vets as possible to let them know that there is real help for all the 90+ issues at Know A Vet both within and outside the VA.  And then to get them to pass our site, or an article on to others they may have served with – especially ones they know are having trouble reintegrating into civilian life.

Let’s cut that 44 vet suicide a day rate! Let’s give them more of the life they sacrificed to give us what we enjoy as Americans.

Timing: This is an ongoing Team program – set your own (mutually agreed upon) schedule, with a minimum of 3 per week for the weeks you choose to work. You will be coordinating with our Executive Board member in charge of social media.

Veteran Champions

Become an advocate, no prior knowledge or experience needed. If you want to help a Vet, family member or caregiver, we want to train you and give you tools for the two of you to succeed.  Interestingly enough, you do not have to be an expert in the services available, because you are NOT recommending anything, ever. You are only helping the vet make their own decisions as to what is important to them and then using our tools and materials to help them organize their actions and follow up.

The essential issue in being a good advocate is to NOT inject your stories or try to become a big brother/sister, but rather listen and answer questions so the vet sets their own priorities and decisions as to what they want help with. Then show them how to use our site to get more detail about their issues and/or go directly to checking off topics, and them prioritizing them so they can give that list to their PCP to have the PCP give them referrals to the specialists they need. Or, they can choose from the list of community resources, if they want to go the private route. Advocates can be both men and women, of any adult age and do not have to have a military background. “Significant others” make excellent advocates.

Advocates work in a variety of areas:

  • Online responding to individual questions
  • Online or on-site with groups, such as colleges with Veteran Student groups, or corporations, houses of worship, and fraternal organizations with veteran’s clubs
  • At events. We do 12 – 20 events a year, and your presence for about 3-4 hours at one of these to set up, talk with passersby and take down our materials makes vets feel welcome. If you are outside the Bay Area, we can show you how to start your own outreach.
  • Ground teams, placing our outreach materials in libraries, coffee shops, restaurants etc.

Commitment: Should take 3-4 hours per assignment. Accept only the assignments you want that fit your schedule.

Researcher

The only way vets will remember us in their time of need is if we were relevant to them before their crisis. Research is the answer. Our articles, blogs, social media, and events all have to be of interest to vets in different demographics. You will be assigned topics (mutually agreed upon) from a list of those most interested by our audiences. It will be up to you to find the articles already written, information from credible organizations working on the topics, and sources of help and information to make sure that when a vet stumbles, they know who to turn to for their first line of help.

You could be saving one of the 44 veteran suicides a day. Let’s give them more of the life they sacrificed to give us what we enjoy as Americans.

Web Team Members

Our site is large, and it requires regular updates to keep current. Whether you are a beginner or a web expert, you are our person. We appreciate help on all levels.

We can always use help maintaining and updating our website on the WordPress CMS. It is relatively simple. I created the first four iterations, so I expect anyone can do better. The current version was done with the fine work of two professional volunteers, one of whom is still with us.

This site needs to be updated to include more links, references to our blog posts, and other content from chosen sources, constantly evolving content, show our current focus on advocacy, encourage KnowAVet News subscriptions and donations to help vets. And, it has to grab the attention of vets like yourself. Naturally, all content has to be coordinated with our Executive Team leader, so that we have a similar voice across all platforms.

Digital Media Specialist

We are looking for a digital media graphic artist to work with the Executive Team to make sure that all of our media ties together and most importantly that it is enticing enough to bring battle-weary vets and their loved ones to our pages without saying, “This is overwhelming. I’ll save it for later.”

This would include updating the format of our web pages so they are inviting, easy to navigate, and the look that coordinates with our newsletter, blogs, and other social media.

Your work making the site and our materials more enticing and easy to take advantage of may help save one of the 44 veteran suicides a day. Let’s give them more of the life they sacrificed to give us what we enjoy as Americans.

Commitment: Should take 3-4 hours per week as KAV fits into your schedule.

Grant Researchers and Writers

This work takes tenaciousness. We have paragraphs ready to drop into grant applications and can create anything else needed in not more than a few days. But the process starts with finding the organizations with appropriate interests to ours, such as seniors or Afghan and Iraqi war vets.

To that end, we are subscribers to both Grant Watch and Grant Station. Each has good search options. But someone has to read the individual possibilities to determine the fit, before you or someone else fills out grant applications.

Fund Raising & Networking

Join our fund-raising team and work on developing events, crowd funding, and online activities that make more vets aware of us and help raise the money it takes to keep this all-volunteer organization going.

If you belong to a group or organization, perhaps, after understanding what we are and do, you might be able to create a fund raiser for our continued outreach to vets.

KAV is certified by Benevity, and a member of Pledge.to, so most major corporations can support us through a share of their profits or through their Matching Funds for employee contributions of money AND time donated.
