Supporting LGBTQ+ veterans: Overcoming challenges and finding resources for well-being in and outside the VA system

As part of our dedication to all veterans, we recognize the significance of providing support to empower LGBTQ+ veterans who encounter distinct challenges throughout and after military service. Discrimination, mental health issues, social isolation, and access to healthcare can all impact one’s well-being.

To empower LGBTQ+ veterans, a range of resources can be found both within and outside the VA system, including tailored support from nonprofit organizations, community groups, as well as federal, state, and local resources.

Know A Vet offers national resource directories as a starting point for your research. Additionally, you can access a database of VA services by zip code and seek guidance from local veterans’ support organizations.

For a deeper understanding and more support, explore:

Make the Connection: A resource sharing stories of LGBTQ+ veterans who have faced similar challenges.
VA’s LGBTQ+ Veterans Page: Comprehensive information on support for LGBTQ+ veterans, including healthcare.
Veterans Crisis Line: Immediate support for veterans facing emotional or psychological challenges.

Remember, you’re not alone. A supportive community of LGBTQ+ veterans and allies is here to provide encouragement and help you on your path to improved well-being. Visit our dedicated ‘LGBTQ+ Community‘ page for more information and resources. Your well-being matters, and we’re here to assist you.

Additionally, here are some non-VA websites and resources that you may find helpful:

  • Self-Help Page: Explore 90+ more resources on our Self-Help page, covering topics including Domestic Violence, Sexual Trauma, and Mental Health.
  • FindHelp.org: Search for local assistance programs based on your location.
  • Monster Career Advice: Explore career advice articles and tips on various topics.

These resources can complement the support available through the VA system and provide you with a broader range of options for assistance, whether it’s related to personal well-being, career development, or finding local help for specific needs.
